The training varied from unit to unit. Most Regiments contained
two battalions. The first battalion was
ready for use overseas. The second
battalion was used as a training battalion and also used to replace
casualties. When the first battalion
was overseas the second would train new recruits and then ship out those who
were trained to the first battalion as was needed The most basic training lasted about four weeks during which time
the recruit was taught how to shoot, drill and the Queens Regulations. This time period was expanded for more elite
units and cavalry. In times of great
need men were often trained for a week and then send to the front to be trained
by the men in the first battalion under fire.
