- In 1900, the normal command of a major general in the Venezuelan army was a battalion of about 290 men.
- The director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Philip de Montebello, is a direct descendant of Jean Lannes, among the greatest of Napoleon's marshals, who died of wounds during the Campaign of 1809.
- During World War II the U.S. Army procured 123 million pair of shoes and boots, enough to provide every one of the approximately 16 million men and women who served - including sailors and marines - with nearly eight pair each.
- The British "Brown Bess" musket, introduced around 1700, remained in first line service with the British Army until 1854, and soldiered on in some odd corners of the world for a decade or more afterwards.

- In October 1914 Lt. Georges Claude of the French Army used an experimental liquid oxygen bomb in an attempt to blow up a villa at which Kaiser Wilhelm II was believed to be staying; although there were no reports of casualties, the attempt resulted in "a certain panic" among the Germans present.
