Britain plans a mid-life upgrade for its Warrior armored infantry fighting vehicles. One aspect of this will be a new turret. General Dynamics Land Systems is proposing to sell the British turrets of the type designed for the Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle. These are two-man power-operated turrets with a 30mm Mark-44 gun and a 7.62mm M240 machinegun. As the Marines will be buying 935 of these turrets, they would be cheaper than an equivalent custom-designed turret. Even better, the Mark-44 gun has a built-in growth path. The 30mm Mark-44 gun can be upgraded to 40mm by simply changing the barrel, replacing the ammunition feed sprockets, and adding an extra recoil spring. Britain has nine battalions of Warriors in service.--Stephen V Cole
