The Army is testing four prototypes for the new Improved Combat Shelter. These are basically one-man tents designed to replace the current "shelter-half" system (which is never used because it is too heavy). The Army also expects it to replace the poncho, since soldiers now use two-piece rain suits and their ponchos are used as tents, ground cloths, and equipment covers. The four prototypes are all commercial designs available "off the shelf". Two have built-in supports; two use poles and stakes. Three have built-in floors. While all are for one man, the Army wants to be able to connect several together to make larger buddy or team shelters.--Stephen V Cole
