The US Army is changing its program to train peacekeeping forces among African Armies from specific fixed-period training events to long-term relationships. The idea is that the US would maintain a more or less permanent presence in such countries, and would continually bring their officers and sergeants to US schools for additional training. The US Army has also offered to tailor a specific program for each country which offers to make troops available for peacekeeping, rather than its current one-program-fits-all system. The US Army would send only small teams (about 20 people) to each country and use these to train a class of 100
instructors each year. These new instructors would then form the training cadre for an entire battalion.--Stephen V Cole
