An American special forces soldier was killed by enemy fire while on patrol in eastern Afghanistan. The 28 year old NCO, Arden Vance Jr., was a member of a National Guard special forces unit that was mobilized for operations in Afghanistan. 

The mysterious fever that has afflicted over three dozen British medical personnel in Afghanistan appears to be a common British viral infection called "winter vomiting."
