So far, the United Nations Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) program has disarmed 38,887 warlord troops. Those disarmed include officers, who get pensions of $350-650 a month, and troops, who get one time payments, job retraining and loans to start new businesses. There are over a hundred warlord groups, and some have required more persuasion than others to disarm. The new Afghan army is being used, as needed, to provide the ultimate argument in favor of disarming. Many of those groups that resist disarming are involved in the drug trade. There are still over 50,000 armed men on warlord payrolls.
