Murders by Islamic radicals are down, and the government estimates that only about 650 rebels are still active. When the violence began in 1992, it was thought there as many as 27,000 activists. Some 15,200 rebels were killed during the violence. Another 6,000 accepted a government amnesty in 1999. Many of these have fled overseas (France, Middle East, North America, Afghanistan and Pakistan.) 

The largest remaining rebel group, the GSPC, with 350-380 members. There are five or six other groups, some splinters from larger groups that accepted the amnesty. None of the smaller groups have more than a hundred members and some are allied with al Qaeda (at least in theory.)
