  One cause of the frequent drug smuggling on the Tajik border with Afghanistan is the miserable economic conditions. Tajiks or Afghans can be hired for five to twenty-five dollars to take drugs across the border and further into Central Asia. But the Russian border guards are alert and willing to shoot.  Despite this, some ten percent of the drugs produced in Afghanistan are still smuggled, with varying degrees of success, through Tajikistan.
