Tajikistan and Uzbekistan signed a treaty agreeing on exactly where 86 percent of there 1283 kilometers of common border is. The rest is still in dispute. Some of the border is mined by Uzbekistan, to keep out rebels who had bases in Afghanistan when the Taliban were in control. The rebels are largely gone, but the mines are still there and 25 Tajik civilians have died stepping on them so far. Few, if any, rebels have encountered the mines. The two nations are still negotiating over lifting the mines.
