While the army has stopped using land mines, FARC has increased it's use of these weapons. This is because the army has been more successful at finding and attacking FARC bases out in the mountains. So FARC has found that mines make excellent weapons to improve the defenses of these bases, and slow down the approaching army troops enough to enable the rebels to get away. But FARC also uses the mines to terrorize or control civilian populations. So far this year, 604 people have been killed or wounded by mines, versus 267 to 2001 and only 29 in 1990.
