Iraq is calling for the Middle East to be a region free of weapons of mass destruction. This is aimed mainly at Israel, which is known to have nuclear weapons (but has never admitted it officially.) Iraq has also said it is willing to consider the return of UN arms inspectors. Every time it appears that the US is closer to invading, Iraq again raises the possibility of bringing back the arms inspectors.
The US has said it will consult on any future operations against Iraq, but reserves the right to act alone.
