In an ominous development, the U.S. has placed orders for an additional (beyond normal use) 311 million gallons of fuel. For the 1991 Gulf War, additional purchases amounted to 340 million gallons. Most of the current purchase is for jet fuel, to be delivered to American bases in Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Gulf States and Diego Garcia. Normal annual purchases of fuel for U.S. forces in this part of the world are about 630 million gallons.
