Israeli air and artillery fire followed Amal attacks on Israeli troops in south Lebanon.

October 1; The US government, in a report prepared by the CIA, warned that, because of the rush to fix Y2K problems, many foreign programmers, particularly in Israel and India, had been used to fix software for major US companies. The danger in this is the opportunity for these programmers to add code, at the behest of their governments, to allow the software to be taken over by these governments for the purpose of espionage or sabotage. The actual number programs so affected would be quite small, as only those running on machines connected to the internet, and not behind a secure "firewall", could be compromised in this way. What was striking was that the US government would publicly warn about this possibility and specifically name Israel.
