Israel: November 22, 2000

A car bomb went off in the northern Israeli town of Hadera, leaving two dead and 55 wounded.  While Israel will feel compelled (because of public opinion) to respond to this, there is also the realization that the world media war sees Israeli retaliation differently. The Palestinians are trying, with some success, to portray any Palestinian violence as self defense and any Israeli violence as unprovoked aggression. So Israel is considering new forms of reaction to Israelis getting killed by the violence. The most effective new approach appears to be assassination of key Palestinian leaders (of all factions.) Because of previous Israeli retaliations, Egypt and Jordan have withdrawn their ambassadors. This makes it more different for Israel to consult with these two nations while trying to put together a peace deal with the Palestinians.
