The continuing violence has seen the army working for a long term solution. New roads are being built in Palestinian territory, and old ones are having buildings and trees cleared from adjacent land. These "military roads" provide few hiding places for Palestinian gunmen and make it easier to spot roadside bombs. New bunkers are being built. Palestinians fear that the army will impose a complete lockdown of their villages and turn them into prisons. For many Israelis, this is just fine with them if it will protect them from the violence.
