Israeli prime minister Sharon announced that the Jordan valley would remain in Israeli hands "forever" for security reasons. The Palestinians consider the Jordan valley part of their homeland. Overnight, Israeli troops moved a hundred meters into Palestinian territory in the Gaza Strip and destroyed 19 houses. The buildings were suspected as being used by Palestinian militants to fore mortars at Israelis.  Syria announced that it did not intend to go to war with Israel over Israeli attacks on Syrian troops in Lebanon.
