South Korea had planned to buy 120 T/A-50 Golden Eagle jet trainers (capable of light attack missions). However, the troubled economy and the need to save money to eventually pay the costs of reunification may curtail the program well short of the planned mark. Some critics want to dump the program altogether and buy the new version of the British Hawk trainer which has been modified to provide training for future Eurofighter Typhoon pilots. The South Koreans bought 120 KF-16s and recently ordered 20 more (fitted to fire AMRAAM) to keep the KAI assembly line running until T/A-50 production begins.--Stephen V Cole
