Liberia: August 11, 2003

President Charles Taylor flew off to exile in Nigeria. Taylor promised that he'd be back. Former president Taylor and his associates looted Liberia freely over the past decade. At least $1.4 billion of that loot has been found in Swiss banks, and frozen. But there is probably more. Each year, Taylor would import millions of dollars in consumer goods (including at least 200 SUVs last year) for his key followers. Meanwhile, government and rebel violence has driven most farmers off their land and shut down most other enterprises. Unemployment in Liberia is estimated to be 50-80 percent.
