The UN estimates that there are some 15,000 troops on both sides who are under age 18. Before 1997, some 20 of fighters were under 18. Since then, the proportion has grown to 70 percent. Warlords all over Africa have discovered that armed kids are easier to control, and cheaper, than adults with guns. 

The main airport outside the capital has resumed scheduled air service.
