President  Obasanjo, faced with a move by parliament to impeach him, has backed off on plans to do a massive investigation of government finances. Although legislators and government officials complain about lack of action against corruption, they really get agitated if anyone actually tries to crack down on corruption. This means that the nation will continue to wallow in corruption and growing popular unrest. Tribal and religious animosities make it difficult for someone to start a popular, nationwide anti-corruption movement. More likely is civil war and a break up of the country.
