Western press sources report that the slow siege of Madagascars capital of Antanarivo is beginning to have effects. Food, medicine, and fuel shortages are cropping up. The road blockades run by the pro-Ratsiraka forces have not been broken by the pro-Ravalomanana forces. One report added that the populace in Antanarivo is urging military action against the blockaders, which may create a political problem for Ravalomanana. It appears that Ratsirakas military support comes from the countrys elite units, which are better armed than the regular forces and police units which support Ravalomanana.
