The Russian population continues to shrink. In the first three months of the year there were 454,900 births and 795,100 deaths. Immigration in and out of the country was a wash, leaving the population at 143.7 million. Alcoholism, poor living conditions, poor health care and reluctance to start families because of economic uncertainty have all contributed to the shrinking population.
