The government announced that it will spend $800 million on new weapons and ammunition to support the fight against the LTTE rebels. Thousands of additional troops are being sent north to aid in the defense of Jaffna. The government has offered to swap prisoners with the LTTE. India has increased it's naval patrols in the waters between the province of Tamil Nadu  and Sri Lanka. The LTTE is banned in India, and that ban, set to expire today, was extended two more years. But the government of Tamil Nadu has been reluctant to interfere with the operations of the LTTE, which is popular with many in Tamil Nadu. The Indian navy will attempt to restrict LTTE supply operations.
