Sri Lanka: Peace Crumbling

Archives

November 5, 2005: So far this year, nearly 200 people have been killed in political violence. That's a sharp increase from about sixty last year. The violence is happening despite the ceasefire with the rebels, and peace negotiations. Most of the killings are a result of a civil war among the rebels (the LTTE).

October 30, 2005: In the capital, a senior military intelligence commander was killed by unidentified gunmen. The LTTE is suspected, as they have accused army intelligence of stirring up factions in the LTTE.

October 29, 2005: In the Tamil north, a demonstration (over the rape of a girl by a soldier) led to a protester getting shot, and two wounded. The Sinhalese soldiers are not popular, and this kind of disturbance only helps the rebels.
