Contractors have come to the conclusion that the plan for converting the heavy brigades to wheels will not survive the Clinton Administration, but they are betting on most of the old light brigades becoming medium brigades. This could mean at least the 25th Infantry and 10th Mountain, plus the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment and the brigade of the 2nd Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, for a total of eight brigades. Some contractors doubt that the program will go beyond five brigades, meaning that the 10th Mountain would remain as a foot-mobile light unit. --Stephen V Cole
