The US Air Force has tested an aircraft defense system that uses a laser to identify approaching shoulder-fired heat-seeking missiles and then sends infrared signals to jam them. The LIFE (Laser Infrared countermeasure Flyout Experiment) system was tested from a test rig suspended between two hills on a cable and is several years from deployment.--Stephen V Cole
