US Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) is considering a change in the way new 2nd Lieutenants are trained. Under the new system, all lieutenants would attend a standardized course at Fort Benning including general military subjects, leadership, and small unit tactics. Each lieutenant would then spend the second half of his training at the school for his branch learning things specific to his new career specialty. The move would reduce costs, ensure that all officers had a standardized course in infantry tactics so they could defend their units from enemy guerrillas or other attacks, and could build the Army community by having all new officers learn and work together for several weeks at the very start of their careers.--Stephen V Cole
