Boeing has received a four-year $82 million Navy contract to develop the Long-term Mine Reconnaissance System. This unmanned vehicle will be able to sneak into minefields and determine the threat to submarines that follow them. Six initial systems are to go to sea on attack submarines in 2004. Boeing also received a $1.6 million Navy contract to develop a small antenna that submarines could use (on their sensor masts) to transmit and receive large amounts of data via satellite while submerged.--Stephen V Cole
