Egypt is negotiating to buy 53 new Harpoon Block-II missiles from the US. These will be used to arm frigates that already carry Harpoon Block-I and new missile boats being built in the US. The Block-II version of the missile has a land-attack capability, using the same GPS-guidance package as the Join Direct Attack Munition. Pro-Israeli US congressmen have objected, noting that Egypt has no plausible naval enemy.--Stephen V Cole
