Algeria: June 29, 2002

Archives

So far this month, rebel attacks left 107 dead and over 100 wounded. Some 730 have died so far this year. This is less than in previous years. Since 1992, over 100,000 have died in the violence. However, the government amnesty and peace program have reduced the number of rebels from 27,000 to about 700. The remaining rebels are hard core and contain many who have worked with al Qaeda. There are thought to be at least several hundred Algerian Islamic militants outside Algeria.

While the war against the Islamic radicals is showing progress, the government is having less success at eliminating the corruption and cronyism that causes so much popular anger and unrest. The men who led the revolution still dominate politics, along with their families. This sort of "ruling class" is very unpopular, especially since the economy has been wrecked by corruption and incompetence.
