Chad: April 22, 2002

Archives

The president of the African Democratic Party (PDA), Gueti Mahamat, died on 22 April from injuries received when his car hit a mine on the 21st. Mahamat, a senior opposition figure, had been traveling between two polling stations on the road to Faya-Largeau airport.

A second mine had been found nearby and defused. The north of Chad is littered with unexploded landmines dating from the 1973-94 border conflict between Chad and Libya. However, the incident is being described as a 'terrorist act and an investigation is underway. - Adam Geibel
