This year, violent deaths were up ten percent, to 38,820. Two thirds were murders. Some 80 percent of the deaths involved the use of firearms. Some 238,277 were injured. Colombia has the highest rate of violent deaths in the Western Hemisphere. Kidnappings were also up, with 3,029 being reported, compared to 2,757 in 1999. Colombia leads the world in this category.
