  An Islamic court condemned long time reformer Hashem Aghajari to death (as well eight years in jail, 74 lashes and a 10-year ban on teaching, in case he survived death). Aghajari. a 45 year old writer and history teacher, is a veteran of the 1980-88 war (where he lost a leg.) He has long called for reform of Iran's Shia religious beliefs and practices. The Shia religious leaders see such speech as a threat and have sometimes had outspoken opponents killed.
