The government, without discussing Iranian Islamic radical groups who openly support terrorist groups, denied that the government supported al Qaeda and pointed out that Iran was at war with the Taliban (in a low key way) from 1995 (when the Taliban took control in western Afghanistan) until late 2001. Actually, the violence continues, as the drug gangs, formerly operating under Taliban protection, still do business, often at gunpoint, on the Iranian border.
