After numerous incidents of heavy gunfire from the Palestinian village of Beit Jala on a nearby Israeli village, troops entered Beit Jala and took up positions to discourage the Palestinian gunmen. This was somewhat unusual, but then the Israelis were ordered to stay in Beit Jala. This angered the Palestinians still further, as it seemed to signal the beginning of an Israeli campaign to permanently reoccupy Palestinian controlled territory.
