The government is asking the US for $90 million a year (through 2010) to pay for decommissioning 190 nuclear submarines.  Already, 97 subs have had their nuclear fuel removed and stored. All nuclear material is to be removed from the subs by 2007, and all the boats broken up by 2010. Meanwhile, Russian missile manufacturer Vympel (which has some joint ventures with Boeing) announced negotiations with American warplane manufacturers to provide missiles and aircraft radars for US exported F-15 and F-18 warplanes. US law prevents many nations from receiving some US air-to-air missiles for these aircraft. So Vympel will provide as many 18,000 AA-12 (also known as the Izdieliye-170, R-77, RVV-AE and Adder) missile. This is the Russian equivalent of the American AMRAAM missile (and is sometimes called the AMRAAMSKI). The aircraft using the R-77 must have the Russian built aircraft radar and fire control system. This project will provide American engineers an intimate knowledge of the R-77 and how to defeat it in the air.
