September 29; SRI LANKA: The 53rd and 55th Divisions began an offensive on 12 Sept, but it was called off within 48 hours due to unexpectedly heavy resistance by the LTTE rebels.--Stephen V Cole

September 28; Several encounters resulted in four soldiers and sixteen LTTE fighters dead.

September 27; Four navy gun goats came across over a dozen LTTE boats attacking a 14,000 ton Chinese freighter off the Sri Lankan coast. Such piracy is not uncommon. LTTE gunfire had already disabled the Chinese ships engines. The navy drove off the LTTE and towed the Chinese ship into port for repairs. None of the 32 man crew on the Chinese boat were injured.

September 26; In several incidents, 21 people died from LTTE violence. A bus bombing killed one and wounded thirty, most of them critically. Elsewhere, two government troops and 17 LTTE fighters died.

September 24; LTTE fighters ambushed an army convoy, killing eighteen. Elsewhere, a dozen people died because of LTTE violence.
