A rebel spokesman associated with the Sudan Peoples Democratic Front (SPDF) said the latest Egyptian-Libyan peace effort would not work because it failed to address the right of self-determination in south Sudan. This is code language for guaranteeing the rights of the Christian and animist tribes in the south. Egypt and Libya are promoting Sudanese unity because Egypt in particular fears a Sudanese break-up (into two or more states) could de-stabilize Egypt.
