January 18, 2006: Dealing with Islamic terrorists in the south is complicated by rivalry between police and army commanders. The two don't cooperate willingly, and often operate at cross purposes. What the security forces have discovered is that there is apparently no major outside influence on the Islamic terrorists. It's a local movement, with little input from Islamic radicals in Malaysia or anywhere else.

January 17, 2006: More Moslems are being killed in the south, as the Islamic terrorists try to intimidate Moslems who do not support the terrorism.

January 14, 2006: More police are being sent south, to protect tourists. Islamic terrorists have now threatened to attack tourists, which would put many southerners, and Moslems, out of work. Tourists are beginning to stay away just because of the threats. The tourist resorts are away from the areas where most of the Islamic terrorism has been taking place. This violence has killed about 1,200 people in the last two years.

January 13, 2006: In the capital, demonstrations against the prime minister, by thousands of people angry at government corruption, and failure to deal with the violence in the south, resulted in the storming of a government compound. Demonstration leaders persuaded people to withdraw. Police later made arrests.
